Co-existence at the Y

Americans initially express surprise upon hearing that the Jerusalem YMCA holds one of the city’s fine restaurants.  The Three Arches restaurant was one of our favorites and continues to hold a special place in our eating plans.  Even better than the food and building design is the degree of coexistence among Muslims, Christians, Jews, and tourists of all backgrounds.  Today’s lunch brought us face to face with the best of that playful mixing: day camp pickup.  The garb of the parents reveals ethnic and religious differences that are erased by the common desire for ice cream, the children’s refusal to stop playing, and their ability to communicate with ease.  Luckily, the Y is right around the corner from our accomodations and it’s always open when we need it.
